How to Make Your Resume Stand Out in 2022

The past year has seen many changes in the job market. As a job seeker, you have more opportunities now than ever. This means you should update your resume to apply for the jobs you want. You can use these tips to make your information stand out from the competition.

Follow these guidelines to update your resume in line with the hiring trends for 2022.

Use Basic Formatting

Organize your resume with a simple format to help it pass through the applicant tracking system (ATS) and onto the hiring manager. For instance, to use either Word or a Google Doc to list your information in reverse chronological order. Begin with your most current position and work your way back for up to 10 years. Also, order your sections logically with your work experience near the top of your resume and your skills, projects, or other information at the bottom. Additionally, limit your resume to 2 pages with standard margins and font sizes. Include enough white space between the sections to help the hiring manager skim your information. Plus, save your resume with your name as a PDF unless requested to do otherwise.

Tailor Your Resume

Use the information in the job posting to target your resume. This shows concrete reasons why you are best qualified for the position. Because the hiring manager typically scans resumes, you need to spell out how your skills, experience, and qualifications best fit with the company’s hiring needs. This may involve changing your skills section, listing your achievements in a different order, or leaving off jobs that lack relevance as you apply for different roles.

Include Keywords

Pepper throughout your resume the keywords used in the job posting. You may want to search for additional keywords by job title and industry and include them as well. This should get your resume past the ATS and into the hands of the hiring manager.

Highlight Remote Work Experience

With the increasing demand for remote employees, share whether you have experience working from home. Include the technology you used and your achievements related to working remotely. Because many employers are turning to fully remote teams, they are looking for candidates with the skills to succeed with little supervision.

Share Your Accomplishments

Hiring managers want to know what you accomplished for previous employers that you also can do for them. Be sure to include 3-6 bullet points of achievements for the duties that are listed in the job description. Begin each bullet point with an action verb to paint your accomplishments in a positive light. Also, highlight the end result or benefit that the company received. Additionally, use metrics to quantify your accomplishments and show how you added value to an organization.
